Welcome to Irish History Week 1
Topic: Historical Lenses and Approaches Please use the following for your ultimate learning experience. These week's blog concerns setting up discussion prompts for the Adobe Connect discussion. Think of this as setting an agenda for the discussion. Think of this as content driven (so please save any class set up questions for emails and the pre discussion discussion. My thoughts: On readings: Why did Swift write Gulliver's Travels? How did the political commentary mirror that of the Irish situation of Swift's time Thinking of Joyce and the symbolism used in his writing, why is the writing relatively dark and / or covert? How Catholic is Ireland? Considering the mythical creatures in books such as C.S. Lewis's Narnia series, what other sources of religious / philosophical inspiration guides Irish artists? How relevant is reading history through the eyes of an author? Historical Theory Historically speaking, what lens did Irish authors view the world? Is this an Irish situation? What is history ultimately? What are the following concepts: Motivation, Bias, Validity, Point of View, Societal Position, World historical Context? What are some of the key concepts in history? What propels history? Why is periodization always inaccurate? |
